For localised prostate cancer, robotic radical prostatectomy is one of the most effective treatments, with cancer control rates comparable to radiotherapy for most tumour grades. The right option — surgery, radiotherapy, or active surveillance — depends on your Gleason score, PSA level, clinical stage, age, and personal priorities. TURP is the long-established surgical standard for an enlarged prostate, removing tissue with an electrical resection loop — recommended by BAUS and NICE. Aquablation uses a robotically guided high-pressure waterjet that maps to a precise pre-treatment plan, making it particularly effective for larger prostates and those where preserving ejaculatory function is a priority. Both require general or spinal anaesthetic and typically 1–2 nights in hospital.

Most patients are discharged within 1–2 days. The urinary catheter is removed at approximately 7–10 days. Light activity can resume within 2–3 weeks and most patients return to office work within 4 weeks. Continence and sexual function continue to recover over 3–12 months. The Retzius-sparing robotic technique is associated with faster continence recovery than the standard approach.

No. You can self-refer directly for a private consultation. Many patients come having noticed symptoms themselves, after a raised PSA from a health screen, or after researching their condition online. A GP referral letter is helpful but not required. If you have private health insurance, check your policy — most insurers do require a GP referral to validate a claim.

PSA is age-related. As a rough guide, BAUS suggests that a PSA above 3 ng/mL in men under 60, above 4 ng/mL in men aged 60–70, and above 5 ng/mL in men over 70 warrants further investigation. However, a raised PSA does not automatically mean cancer — prostate infection, inflammation, and benign enlargement can all raise PSA. A urology review will assess the full clinical picture, including PSA velocity (how quickly it is rising) and a prostate MRI if indicated.
