Clear clinical information for patients researching prostate surgery — from Aquablation and Rezum for an enlarged prostate, to robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Written by Mr Torath Ameen, a consultant urologist and robotic surgeon who leads the da Vinci robotic urology programme at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals.
Appointments booked here are private. Initial consultation £300. Self pay or insured.
A robotic waterjet, guided by live ultrasound, removes the tissue blocking urine flow. It works for small and very large prostates, and has the best record for preserving ejaculation of any surgical option. Mr Ameen offers it with the latest HYDROS system at The Wellington Hospital and with Aquabeam at Spire Bushey.

Whether you've just received a diagnosis, been referred by your GP, or are researching your options — start with the condition that applies to you.
All clinical information on this site follows the standards and patient information published by BAUS — the professional body representing over 2,500 UK consultant urologists. Mr Ameen is a verified BAUS member surgeon.
We link directly to BAUS patient information leaflets for every major prostate procedure, so you can read independently verified guidance alongside what we provide.
Most prostate surgery websites are either too clinical to be useful, or too commercial to be trusted. This site sits in neither category.
Every condition and procedure page is written to BAUS standards, cross-referenced with current NICE guidelines and EAU recommendations, and authored by Mr Torath Ameen — a consultant urologist who performs these operations weekly.
The goal is simple: read what you need to understand your situation, then decide whether to book a consultation. There is no pressure either way.

For localised prostate cancer, robotic radical prostatectomy is one of the most effective treatments, with cancer control rates comparable to radiotherapy for most tumour grades. The right option — surgery, radiotherapy, or active surveillance — depends on your Gleason score, PSA level, clinical stage, age, and personal priorities. A specialist consultation will map the best route for your specific situation, drawing on a multidisciplinary team that includes some of the strongest urological oncology minds in the UK.
Aquablation uses live 3D ultrasound imaging throughout the procedure — the surgeon sees the prostate in real time as the robotic waterjet removes tissue. TURP relies on the surgeon's endoscopic vision alone. This live guidance makes Aquablation more precise, allows a patient-specific pre-planned resection, and significantly reduces the risk to the ejaculatory ducts — giving Aquablation the lowest retrograde ejaculation rate of any surgical BPH treatment. It is also effective for much larger prostates (up to 150ml) where TURP becomes technically difficult.
No. You can self-refer directly for a private consultation. Many patients come after noticing symptoms themselves, a raised PSA on a health screen, or researching their condition online. A GP referral letter is helpful but not required. If you have private health insurance, most insurers do require a GP referral to validate a claim — check your policy before booking.
An initial consultation costs £300. Follow-up appointments are £200. Mr Ameen is fee-assured with major insurers including Bupa and AXA — insured patients typically pay no shortfall. Surgical fees depend on the procedure and hospital, and are confirmed in full before any commitment is made. Contact Belinda Devine on 0204 558 6750 for any questions about costs or insurance.
PSA is age-related. As a general guide: above 2.5 ng/mL under 50; above 3 ng/mL at ages 50–59; above 4 ng/mL at ages 60–69; above 5 ng/mL over 70. A raised PSA does not automatically mean cancer — BPH, prostatitis and other factors can raise it. A urology review will assess the full clinical picture, including PSA velocity and a prostate MRI if indicated.
Consultant-led throughout. Every patient assessed, treated and followed up directly by Mr Ameen, supported by some of the strongest urological oncology minds in the UK.
